It’s safe to say that many
individuals fantasize because particularly, it is a gateway from living in the
truth of reality. Fantasies are an
alternative way of imagining a world that one wishes to live in. “I couldn’t go
on believing her story and live with Stanley” (Stella, 1232). A Streetcar Named
Desire, written by Tennessee Williams, was a Drama Play primarily revolving
around the theme of Desire and Fantasies. Introducing Blanche, coming from a
rough past, is automatically seen as a desperate woman craving love, fortune,
and glamour. Stanley being the antagonist that he is, led to blanches mental
breakdown where he sexually punishes her. Stella then picks the side of Stanley
rather than believing the truth from Blanche. She would rather continue living
a life, no matter what it takes, with Stanley and try to grow a normal family
rather than proceeding with the mentality of Blanche which seemed to be
Stella’s motive and even her own fantasy.
Stella’s desire displays desperation at its finest. Her only aspiration
at the end of the play is to feel accepted and comfort. When it comes to
relating this type of desire to many current circumstances, there are plenty.
Brutal relationships is one huge topic in today’s society. In this play, we are
exposed to frequent amount of examples of Domestic Violence. If Stella knows
and feels like she is being physically abused by Stanley, why does she still
want to sustain their relationship? Believe it or not, domestic violence is
very common in the United States. According to American Bar Association, nearly
1.3 million women and 835,000 men are physically assaulted by their partners
annually. But on the other hand, partners would rather deal with the violence
than avoiding it. There are many reasons to why women and even men compel to
stay. People are very emotional and have fantasies about being loved. Being
alone is definitely not something they fantasize about. Fear and disability
play a major role in this concept. A person may be very afraid of what will
happen if they decide to leave the relationship. Also when someone is
physically dependent on their abusive partner, they can feel that their
well-being is connected to the relationship (thehotline.org).
